Power Outage at the Munich Colocation

8 August 2008 | INGATE Team

On August 8, 2008, a brief power outage occurred in the supply network of our Munich data center. We would like to provide a transparent report on the incident.

What Happened?

A failure in the public power supply caused an interruption of the regular power feed.

How Did the Infrastructure Respond?

The redundant power supply worked as designed:

  1. UPS Systems: The uninterruptible power supplies took over immediately
  2. Backup Diesel Generators: The diesel generators were started automatically
  3. Seamless Switchover: No interruption of power supply to the servers

Impact on Customers

Thanks to the redundant power supply, there was no impact on our customers. All servers continued to run without interruption throughout the entire period.

Conclusion

This incident demonstrates why redundant infrastructure is so important. The investment in high-quality UPS systems and backup diesel generators has paid off. This is exactly what professional colocation is for.
