Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most important questions about the INGATE Hybrid Cloud.

What is a Hybrid Cloud at INGATE?
The INGATE Hybrid Cloud connects different infrastructure types — cloud VMs, bare-metal servers, and colocation hardware — into a unified, flexible IT environment. At its core is Cloud Connect: through a single web interface, you manage your entire heterogeneous infrastructure as one logical unit. This way, you use the optimal environment for each workload without the complexity of separate systems.
What is Cloud Connect and why is it important?
Cloud Connect is INGATE's platform for seamlessly networking all infrastructure components. It connects cloud VMs, bare-metal servers, and colocation hardware via high-performance direct links (Direct Connect) into one logical unit. Management is handled through a single web interface — regardless of where your workloads physically run. That means: one management plane, one network, one point of contact.
Which infrastructure types can I combine?
You can freely combine cloud VMs (for flexible, scalable workloads), bare-metal servers (for maximum performance without virtualization overhead), and colocation hardware (for full control over your own systems). All components communicate via Direct Connect with low latencies — as if they were in the same rack. The configuration is fully customizable and scales with your requirements.
How does INGATE differ from hyperscaler hybrid offerings?
Hyperscaler offerings like AWS Outposts or Azure Stack lock you into a proprietary ecosystem — with its pricing, roadmap, and limitations. At INGATE, we rely on open standards and avoid vendor lock-in. You can freely move workloads between environments, pay no egress fees, and retain full data sovereignty under German law. Additionally, you get a dedicated point of contact instead of anonymous self-service.
Is there vendor lock-in with INGATE?
No, we consistently rely on open standards. Standard APIs, common protocols, and documented interfaces allow you to migrate workloads at any time. Your infrastructure belongs to you — not to the cloud provider. There are no proprietary formats or hidden dependencies.
Which scenarios is the Hybrid Cloud suited for?
Typical scenarios include: companies with mixed workloads (e.g., database on bare metal, web frontend in the cloud), burst-to-cloud for seasonal peak loads, gradual cloud migration without a big-bang transition, compliance-driven architectures (sensitive data on-prem, non-critical workloads in the cloud), and disaster recovery with failover between environments.
How does Direct Connect work?
Direct Connect establishes dedicated, high-performance network connections between all infrastructure components. Unlike VPN tunnels over the public internet, Direct Connect offers consistently low latencies, high bandwidth, and guaranteed performance. The connections are encrypted and logically separated from other traffic.
Which compliance standards are met?
Our data centers are ISO 27001 certified. INGATE is an owner-managed German company — all data is exclusively subject to German law and the GDPR. No CLOUD Act, no data transfers to third countries. On request, we provide support for BSI-Grundschutz and industry-specific requirements.
What does the Hybrid Cloud onboarding process look like?
In a personal consultation, we analyze your existing infrastructure and requirements. Our architects design a tailored hybrid architecture and define which workloads run optimally where. Implementation is carried out step by step — without downtime and without a big-bang migration. You retain a dedicated point of contact throughout the entire process.
Can I connect hyperscalers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud?
Yes. Via Cloud Connect and Direct Connect, we establish dedicated, private connections to all major hyperscalers — comparable to AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, or Google Cloud Interconnect. Traffic between your INGATE infrastructure and the hyperscaler runs over private lines with guaranteed bandwidth and consistently low latencies — not over the public internet. This allows you to use specialized hyperscaler services (AI/ML, Big Data Analytics, IoT) while sensitive data and core applications remain on your sovereign INGATE infrastructure in Germany.
What is Direct Connect to hyperscalers and what are its benefits?
Direct Connect to hyperscalers is a dedicated, private network connection between your INGATE infrastructure and the respective cloud provider. Unlike VPN connections over the public internet, Direct Connect offers: consistent latencies under 5 ms (instead of variable 20-50 ms), guaranteed bandwidth from 1 to 100 Gbit/s, enhanced security through physically separated connections, and often significantly reduced egress costs at the hyperscaler. We handle the setup entirely — you benefit immediately from the connection without having to worry about peering, cross-connects, or provider contracts.
Which European cloud providers can I connect via INGATE?
Through our Equinix locations and Cloud Connect, we enable interoperability with a wide range of European cloud providers — including OVHcloud, Hetzner Cloud, Open Telekom Cloud (T-Systems), IONOS Cloud, Scaleway, Exoscale, and more. The connection is established via Direct Connect or Private Peering and offers the same advantages as with hyperscalers: private lines, low latencies, and guaranteed bandwidth. This lets you build a multi-cloud architecture that preserves European data sovereignty while leveraging the strengths of different providers.
What does interconnectivity mean and why is it important?
Interconnectivity describes the ability to seamlessly connect different networks, cloud platforms, and infrastructures. In a modern IT landscape, companies rarely work with just one provider. INGATE serves as the central hub of your entire IT infrastructure: from here, you connect via Direct Connect with hyperscalers, European cloud providers, SaaS platforms, and your own locations. All connections run over private lines with centralized management — instead of managing a tangle of individual VPN tunnels.
What are egress costs?
Egress costs are fees that cloud providers charge for outbound data traffic — that is, for data leaving the data center toward the internet or other networks. Every API response, every download, every video stream, and every backup replication generates egress traffic. Most hyperscalers charge these costs per GB, which can quickly become a significant and hard-to-predict cost factor. Especially with data-intensive applications, these fees add up rapidly.
Does INGATE charge egress costs?
No. At INGATE, outbound data traffic is already included in the price — no per-GB fees, no hidden surcharges. This makes your costs fully predictable and transparent. Especially for data-intensive applications like CDN, streaming, large APIs, or backup replication, this results in a massive cost advantage compared to the major hyperscalers.
How much do egress costs at hyperscalers amount to?
AWS charges approx. $0.09/GB (first 10 TB), Azure approx. $0.087/GB, and Google Cloud approx. $0.12/GB. A company transferring 10 TB per month pays roughly $900-1,200/month for outbound traffic alone. At 100 TB, it's already $8,000-9,000+/month. These costs are hard to predict since they depend on user behavior, API call volume, and traffic patterns — making TCO calculation difficult and frequently leading to unexpectedly high bills (so-called "bill shock"). At INGATE, traffic is included, making total costs fully calculable from day one.
