Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions about Managed Databases.

What is Database as a Service (DBaaS)?
Database as a Service (DBaaS) is a cloud service where we fully host, manage, and maintain your databases. You get a production-ready database in minutes — without having to worry about installation, patching, backups, or high availability.
Which database engines are supported?
We support five engines: PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB as relational databases, Redis as an in-memory database for caching and session management, and MongoDB as a document store for flexible data models. All current stable versions are available.
What is the difference between the database engines?
PostgreSQL is the most powerful open-source database with advanced SQL support, JSON features, and an extensive extension ecosystem — ideal for complex enterprise workloads. MySQL is the most widely used database for web applications and CMS systems. MariaDB is a MySQL fork with optimized performance and additional storage engines. Redis is an in-memory database for sub-millisecond latency. MongoDB offers flexible document storage without a fixed schema.
How does high availability work?
With high availability enabled, your database is replicated across 3 nodes — one primary and two standby replicas with automatic failover via a redundant load balancer. Optionally, the 3 nodes can be distributed across different availability zones (at least 30 km apart) for maximum fault tolerance.
What is Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR)?
Point-in-Time Recovery allows you to restore your database to any point in time within the retention period (7 days by default). This protects not only against hardware failures but also against accidental deletions or faulty migrations.
Can I migrate my existing database?
Yes, we support migration of existing databases — including from AWS RDS, Azure Database, Google Cloud SQL, IONOS, or self-hosted servers. Our database administrators guide the migration process and ensure a smooth transition with minimal downtime. The migration check is free of charge.
Can I scale the database at any time?
Yes, both scale-up and scale-down are possible at any time. You can flexibly adjust vCores, RAM, and storage — including downward scaling. This sets us apart from many providers that only allow upward scaling.
Are there hidden costs?
No. Our prices are transparent and include monitoring, alerting, and network traffic. Daily automatic backups are included in every configuration. There are no additional costs for IOPS or egress traffic — unlike many hyperscalers.
How is billing handled?
All resources are billed monthly. You configure engine, compute resources, storage, and add-ons individually and only pay for what you use. No minimum contract term.
What are egress costs?
Egress costs are fees that cloud providers charge for outbound data traffic — i.e., data leaving the data center toward the internet or other networks. Every API response, every download, every video stream, and every backup replication generates egress traffic. Most hyperscalers charge these costs per GB, which can quickly become a significant and hard-to-predict cost factor. Especially with data-intensive applications, these fees add up rapidly.
Does INGATE charge egress costs?
No. At INGATE, outbound data traffic is already included in the price — no per-GB fees, no hidden surcharges. This makes your costs fully predictable and transparent. Especially for data-intensive applications like CDN, streaming, large APIs, or backup replication, this results in a massive cost advantage compared to the major hyperscalers.
How much do egress costs at hyperscalers amount to?
AWS charges approx. $0.09/GB (first 10 TB), Azure approx. $0.087/GB, and Google Cloud approx. $0.12/GB. A company transferring 10 TB per month pays about $900–1,200/month for outbound traffic alone. At 100 TB, it is already $8,000–9,000+/month. These costs are hard to predict as they depend on user behavior, API call volume, and traffic patterns — making TCO calculation difficult and frequently leading to unexpectedly high bills ("bill shock"). At INGATE, traffic is included, making total costs fully predictable from day one.
