Energy-Efficient Servers - Power Supply Efficiency

5 September 2008 | INGATE Team

The power consumption of servers is significantly influenced by the efficiency of their power supplies. An inefficient power supply wastes energy as heat.

What Does Power Supply Efficiency Mean?

A power supply converts alternating current from the outlet into direct current for the server components. In the process, some energy is lost as heat. Efficiency indicates what percentage of the consumed energy is actually available to the server components.

80 Plus Certification

The 80 Plus certification guarantees minimum efficiency levels:

  • 80 Plus: At least 80% efficiency
  • 80 Plus Bronze: At least 82% efficiency
  • 80 Plus Silver: At least 85% efficiency
  • 80 Plus Gold: At least 87% efficiency
  • 80 Plus Platinum: At least 89% efficiency

Example Calculation

For a server with 200W power consumption:

  • Standard power supply (75%): 267W from the outlet, 67W loss
  • 80 Plus Gold (87%): 230W from the outlet, 30W loss

With hundreds of servers, the savings add up to thousands of euros per year.

INGATE Standard

All INGATE servers exclusively use highly efficient server power supplies with 80 Plus certification. This protects the environment and reduces operating costs.
