Redundancy, Not Just in the Data Center

22 April 2009 | INGATE Team

Redundancy is a fundamental principle in data center operations. But redundancy should not stop at hardware.

Hardware Redundancy

In the data center, redundancy is standard:

  • Redundant power supply (UPS, emergency diesel generators)
  • Redundant network connectivity (multiple carriers)
  • RAID systems for disk failures
  • Redundant cooling

Process Redundancy

Equally important is redundancy in processes:

  • Documentation: All configurations and processes must be documented
  • Knowledge transfer: No system should be understood by only one person
  • Backup strategies: Multi-layered backups at different locations
  • Emergency plans: Defined procedures for every conceivable incident

Know-How Redundancy

At INGATE, we ensure that every system can be managed by multiple engineers. Vacation, illness, or staff turnover must never lead to a loss of knowledge.

That is real redundancy — not just on the spec sheet.
