Plesk Installer Error After Debian dist-upgrade

25 January 2012 | INGATE Team

After a Debian dist-upgrade, the Plesk Installer may stop working and display error messages. Here is the cause and the solution.

The Problem

After a dist-upgrade of Debian (e.g., from Squeeze to Wheezy), the Plesk Installer reports an error when trying to update or install Plesk components. The cause lies in changed dependencies and library paths.

Solution

In most cases, it helps to re-download the Plesk Installer and restart the installation. If the problem persists, the Plesk repositories must be manually updated to match the new Debian version.

Recommendation

We generally recommend:

  1. Creating a full backup before a dist-upgrade
  2. Testing the upgrade in a test environment
  3. Updating Plesk to the latest version before the dist-upgrade

Managed Server Customers

For managed server customers, we perform dist-upgrades in a planned and controlled manner to prevent such issues from the outset.
